SUMMARY:Brunch & Learn: Community Action's Role in Food & Nutrition
DESCRIPTION:What are the hunger and nutrition issues facing families in Skagit County? Learn about community collaborations to provide nutritious food for babies and kids\, seniors\, rural residents\, and food bank customers. We will focus on Community Action’s key nutrition programs:\n\n\n\n\n\n– Skagit Food Distribution Center\, the hub that supports all food banks and meal programs in Skagit County and beyond. Learn about how we support local farmers\, and get nutritious local produce to food banks; and food boxes for home-bound seniors. Hear about our role in the emergency food system during disasters\, and our role during the pandemic.\n\n\n\n\n\n– WIC: The Women\, Infant and Children Program’s goal is to stop poverty upstream: Get kids ready to learn with good nutrition. This gateway program engages families for several years\, and is the fist touch to them getting wrap-around support services from Community Action’s other programs. Learn how WIC helps families save money\, and our role in the recent formula shortage.\n\n\n\n\n\n– Concrete Community Center Meal Program: Community Action provides a nutritious lunch to over 50 rural and isolated community members Monday through Friday\, and kept serving throughout the pandemic. Learn about hunger issues in rural areas\, and how a meal is more than just nutrition: It’s also community building and meaningful connections that help people thrive.\n\n\n\n\n\n-Basic Food: With so many families struggling to pay the bills\, Basic Food (formerly known as EBT or food stamps) provides an important income support\, as well as nutrition.
